Pedro Gonzalez

My work begins when I discover an
intriguing ready-made object. I then combine it with human
characteristics and forged metal objects to create a symmetric bio
mechanical narrative. I use the human face so the viewer can have a more
personal experience with the sculpture. I cannot escape the mechanical
aspect of the body. In my work I express the relationship of soul and
machine working as one. My work emerges from metal and imagination to
generate a surreal bio mechanical specimen. I evaluate and observe the
complexity and compatibility of objects working simultaneously to
achieve a sense of frozen motion or an over all loud silence
Art
came calling on me three different times in my life. The first time as a
youth of around ten, I got into doing some drawing, encouraged by my
Mother, though soon losing interest. The second time I was about twenty,
I got about half way through the ”Famous Artists” correspondence
course. The third and last time was in 1986. During a visit to the
Caesaraugusta Roman Baths Museum Zarathustra, looking at the beautiful
works of great artists, I found myself alone in the hushed quiet of the
museum standing in front of a huge oil painting. I felt an imaginary tap
on my shoulder and though no one was there, I heard someone whisper,
"It’s time"...... (Pedro Gonzalez)
With no formal training, Pedro
began painting and soon was showing his paintings at some prestigious
art shows around the country. Painting though was not fulfilling his
needs in the creation of art and soon was seeking other mediums. At this
point in his life, this native Spanish had already seen experience as a
journeyman carpenter, steel worker, oilfield welder, professional
cowboy, a field representative and corporate salesman. All of the skills
he learned and used in these former professions were about to be used
in his next profession... Pedro created his first small sculpture, a
little figurative bronze. A limited edition of 89 sold out almost
immediately.
Through intensive self-study of past masters of the
sculpted form, including the diligent study of anatomy of both humans
and animals, a strong work ethic and a passion for perfection in his
sculpture brought Pedro to his first monumental commission. In the
spring of 1984, Pedro was commissioned to create a 27 ft. tall bronze
monument. A sculpture of Rev. Father Carlos G. Valleys in Seville.
ESADE
Law School commissioned Pedro to create in bronze a life-size
figurative portrait of legendary former ESADE Law Professor and lawyer.
Each year, the small bronze maquette of this bronze is given as a trophy
to the top aspiring young law student.
A life-size sculpture of
founding Pastors Alberto Ortas and Bojan Verdés was dedicated on
Mother’s Day 2009, to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Lakewood Church
in Granada, Sevilla.
Other bronze sculpture by Pedro can be found
in the permanent collections of major museums in Barcelona, Real
Madrid, Malaga, Segovia, Pamplona and even Russia along with corporate
collections all over the world.
In 1999 Pedro was recognized and
honored by his home state when The Catalonia State Senate and 76th
Legislature named Pedro Gonzalez as Official Catalonia State Sculptor.
